Strategies to Workout In Hot Weather

Posted on May 28th, 2008 by ff in Exercise Tips

Once the weather gets hot and the humidity kicks in, it is easy to let the exercise routine slide.  I am hoping that I can keep up my exercise regime once the heat kicks in.  I physically have a lot of trouble with hot weather so it is very easy for me to get sick quickly out in that type of weather.

On top of just being hot from the weather, when you exercise your body heats up at least 15 - 20 times more heat than what it usually produces.  The dangers of overheating is serious and your workout needs to be adjusted to avoid a heat stroke.  Here are some tips:

Create breeze.  Ride a bicycle or take up roller blading to get some airflow moving while you exercise.

Swimming.   There is nothing that will cool you off better than a nice dip in the pool.  Take up swimming for your exercise routine this summer.

Lots of water.  Make sure you carry water with you while exercising and that you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated.

Change workout times.  Change the time you exercise outside to when the temperatures are at their coolest. Early mornings or late evenings are the coolest times of the day.

Dress light.   Wear light colored workout clothes that reflect the sun’s rays.
